Wave
Wave by Suzy LeeMy review
rating: 4 of 5 stars
Man! I'd give this five stars -- Lee's painterly, textured style coupled with the loose charcoal pencil is right up my alley. However -- and I'm terribly sorry that there's a however -- the blatant disregard for the gutter takes the 2008 Caldecott away from this otherwise amazing book. So much art gets lost; I'm sad.

mark ryden
I just remembered this painter's work. I appreciate it for its surrealist tone--also for the bizarre conversations Ryden creates between the objects he paints. At times, the grotesque qualities in conjunction with the children are a bit too much for my stomach to handle, but I think the intertextual qualities coupled with a cartoon-like, popular style draw me to his work. I also think his work mimes a bit of Joe Sorren's. I'm also sometimes into these visceral responses that I have to images as peculiar as these.
